This is a book review of The Universe by Andrew Cohen.

The Universe, by Andrew Cohen (William Collins), 2023 (originally published 2021). Pp. 272, 19.5 × 13 cm. Price £9.99 (paperback, ISBN 978 0 00 838935 2).

The title is something of an exaggeration, as there are only five major topics (each with its own chapter). However, any book broad enough to cover the entire Universe would be very shallow. he areas covered &emdash; exoplanets, stars, galaxies, black holes, and the early Universe &emdash; are a mixture of major subjects in the field and those with a large public interest (or both). At about fifty pages each, the chapters are long enough to explore the corresponding topics in some detail. The book is very well written, has compartively few typos or other goofs, and, though non-technical, does not oversimplify. I recommend the book as a good introduction to those interested in various aspects of our Universe which, by limiting the breadth of topics covered, goes into somewhat more depth than is usually the case in otherwise similar books.
